I’m writing a novel about a ghost submarine in the Baltic Sea gathering souls of dead mariners from different eras to be its crew. It is a tribute to the maritime legacy of the Baltic and a melancholy elegy for men lost at sea and lingering in a foggy purgatory who get a second chance.
The novel is in Finnish. It is based on a finalist of Nova contest 2025, called Hyvästi, Ryssänluoto. (Literal meaning: Goodbye, Russkie Islet. It is an allusion to a Finnish poem by Yrjö Jylhä: Hyvästi, Kirvesmäki).
